Miss Poppeia Pickford is sure she does not want a husband. She wants to be free of all such shackles. It is just a pity that polite society does not agree with her view ... and nor does her heart, when she encounters the dangerous highwayman whose laughing grey eyes seem to penetrate her soul.

Little does Poppeia know she will soon be taking to the highways of England herself - with Blackstrap Jack's own pistol in her hand. Nor that a very dangerous lord is out there, waiting for her ...

Another Regency romance from the Petticoat Club series.

Poppies was in a coach with her mother and brother when they were held up by two highwaymen. The one in charge who claimed to be Blackstrap Jack, told her to get out and demanded their jewels. Her mother handed over hers and Poppeia took off her earrings and reached out with her left hand. With her right hand she snatched his gun from the holster and had the one throw down his weapon. "Jack" refused to give up though he did not take her earrings and he got on his horse and rode off. Poppy' s father had taught her to handle guns and shoot. She was quite popular among the ton after her experience.

Then she and her friends found that another friend was either raped or it was attempted by her uncle who refused to offer marriage. The women decided to teach him a lesson. They dressed as men and held up his coach. Unfortunately Lord Rolland and his man came by and interrupted them. Poppeia' s gun went off almost grazing Lord Rolland and Poppy rode off with Rolland following her, catching her and unseating her from her horse. They recognized one another from entertainments and the women realized he could tell on them. Robbery would be a hanging offence.

The intended victim of their crime was able to find out that Poppeia was one of his highly thieves and threatened to disclose identities to get them hanged unless Poppy met him in private and that she must be a virgin.

Rolland who had later wounded Rolland after he asked her to marry him and was going to work on producing an air. When he started to remove his trowsers poppy shot him in the shoulder. She thought he was no better than Nell' s uncle as she did nit believe he could want to marry her. She had vowed not to
marry as she did not want to be under the hand of any man.

Poppy is in deed trouble from the villain. The other women are all in danger as well. The Pettycoat Club fear the gallows. This was a very interesting short story and is a continuation of the Pettycoat Club. I read several books by this author and enjoyed each one. I recommend it. These are women who fly in the face of Recency rules for women, but they must remain anonymous, at least to all but those who love them, and their parents.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It was very funny. I keep wondering with girls would have really done something like this back then.
I really liked this one, a uniquely interesting storyline that had me hooked and didn't take too much of my time. Highly recommended!
This is a cute short story..it follows a predictable plot template but serves the purpose of a fun, quick read with a happy ending that one expects
Book was surprisingly good. Characters were interesting. Book wasn't too long. It went right into it & kept you reading.
Loved it

The story line was easy to follow. The story in whole was easy to read, short though. The author drew you in and let you experience what the characters felt. I will read more books from this author.
Based on the title alone, I would never have read this one. But because of a recommendation from a fellow reader I am pleased to have had the opportunity. What I found most outstanding about this very quick read is that the characters are well developed, believable, and easy to "approach." Good solid writing and good feelings are the rewards for a small amount of time investment in reading this very entertaining story.
I really loved this novella and would give it 10 stars if I could! It is well written and nicely edited, with interesting relatable characters. The story is action packed from start to finish, and for me there were many LOL moments. Poppeia is a young woman with a mind of her own. She's feisty, brave, smart, and independent. She has no interest in marriage, and secretly does all she can to discourage potential suitors. Poppeia and her group of close-knit friends, decide to disguise themselves as highwaymen, to exact revenge for the rape and ruin of one of their number. I will admit that the highwayman ruse is a bit juvenile, but this is a lighthearted romance, so it fit in perfectly with the rest of the story.

On the particular night the ladies choose to enact their ruse, the holdup is interrupted by the hero, Lord Roland. He pursues and captures Poppeia, thus uncovering her identity. Of course he uses this information to blackmail Poppeia, and from there the story quickly progresses to its conclusion. Roland is a spoilt, bored aristocrat (as he describes himself.) He engages in offbeat pursuits for amusement, such as pretending to be a highwayman. I admit I wasn't too sure about Roland at first. He seemed too much on the rakish side for me. However, it very quickly became clear that he didn't mean Poppeia any harm, and before long I fell in love with him. When Roland tries to seduce Poppeia, and magnanimously offers to marry her, she shoots him. I'm telling you, this story will have you doing a deal of chuckling. Later when Poppeia finds herself in a coil because of her highwayman ruse, Roland comes to her aide, like a knight in shining armor.

As with a lot of regency romances you have to suspend disbelief to a certain extent to allow for the inaccuracies related to the time period, (in this instance the heroine is always able to sneak out and have rendezvous in the middle of the night, without ever being discovered) but my philosophy is that it's a romance FICTION not a historical treatise, so the author is certainly allowed some artistic creativity. I loved this novella and highly recommend it as a thoroughly entertaining read. BTW this is not a clean romance. Happy reading!
